That same name we use for a traditional Christmas decoration — web-like mobiles made of straw. “Spiders” were meant to hang from the top of the ceiling in a corner called “pokut” (the corner decorated with icons, embroidered cloth etc). Just where the real spiders prefer to live. The “spider’s” mission was to absorb all the negative energy, purify the ambiance and bring happiness to the house. Every year during Christmas celebration the old spider was burned and a new one created. This craft has originated in Northern and Eastern Europe and can be found in most places, where grain growing (and straw) is a key component of people’s lives. So much that I knit TWO Pina Coladas, mixing up my yarn choice and the silhouette on the second.

I designed Pina Colada as a sweater that would skim my curves. The knit begins with less ease at the waist and slowly increases in circumference towards the bust, never getting too loose, but having just enough positive ease to be comfortable. I envisioned this as a polished wardrobe staple to wear with all my high-waisted pants and skirts, so I chose De Rerum Gilliatt in Poivre Blanc for a classic, wear-everywhere fabric in a gorgeous natural heather.

But once that was done, I kinda wanted another.

I decided to play with a looser fit the second time, so I could layer a button down beneath the sweater or half-tuck it casually into my jeans. I began the hem with a little more ease along the side panels and worked the body just a bit longer than before. Small changes, but a very different fit due to both the new fabric and my mods.

On both versions, I worked my sleeves to be long and loose. Before beginning your project, measure yourself with a measuring tape around your bust (or your widest upper body part) to determine which size will fit you the best. For example, if you measure 95 cm [37½ inches] you should knit a size M. A size M shirt has a finished circumference of 96 cm [37¾ inches], which in the given example would mean 1 cm [½ inches] of positive ease.

Sizes: XS (S) M (L) XL (2XL) 3XL (4XL) 5XL

Bust circumference: 85 (91) 96 (100) 110 (120) 130 (140) 153 cm [33½ (35¾) 37¾ (39¼) 43¼ (47¼) 51¼ (55) 60¼ inches]

Lengths: Total length: 52 (54) 56 (60) 62 (62) 64 (66) 68 cm [20½ (21¼) 22 (23½) 24½ (24½) 25¼ (26) 26¾ inches]
Sleeve length: 9 (9) 10 (10) 10 (10) 10 (10) 10 cm [3½ (3½) 4 (4) 4 (4) 4 (4) 4 inches]

Gauge: 20 sts x 28 rows = 10 x 10 cm [4 x 4 inches] in stockinette stitch on 4 mm [US6] needles after wash and blocking

Suggested needles: Circular needles: 4 mm [US6] / 40, 60, 80 and/or 100 cm [16, 24, 32 and/or 40 inches], circular needles 3.5 mm [US4] / 80 or 100 cm [32 or 40 inches]
Double-pointed needles: 4 mm [US6] and 3.5 mm [US4] (if the Magic Loop technique is not used)

Materials: 250 (300) 300 (350-400) 400 (450) 450-500 (500) 500 g Line from Sandnes Yarn (50 g = 110 m)

PLEASE NOTE **This is an electronic pattern that will be sent to you as a download link directly from Ravelry. It begins with the centre square diamond worked in garter st. The square is worked from one point of the diamond to the opposite point increasing in the first half of the square and decreasing for the second half. Yarnovers are formed at the beginning of every row during the centre diamond section. Stitches are then easily picked up from the very visible yarn over loops along the edges and the border is worked outwards from the centre square. The shawl is finished with an edging that is knitted sideways and attached to the live sts of the border as it is being worked.

This construction for a traditional Shetland hap is considered the “modern” method. I never tire of walking in this landscape and soaking in the rich palette. I also love to wear a slouchy style hat that can be pulled down to cover my ears when it’s cold and windy outside! All of these elements played a part in this design. The Bousta Beanie uses three colours combined to great effect within a simple Fair Isle pattern.
